The checklist, in priority order
- 1. Match enzyme to food substrate — Lactase for lactose, alpha-galactosidase for bean/vegetable oligosaccharides, protease for protein, lipase for fat. A full-spectrum blend isn't automatically better if it dilutes the one enzyme you actually need.
- 2. Compare activity units per full serving — Look for a standardized activity unit (ALU, GalU, HUT, DU, FIP — see the activity units guide) at the labeled serving size — not just milligrams.
- 3. Check serving size — Confirm the activity unit is stated at the actual recommended serving, not a fractional or maximum dose.
- 4. Check format, source and allergens — Animal (e.g. pancreatin), microbial, or plant-based (e.g. bromelain, papain) — matters for dietary restrictions and pH range. Check the ingredient list for allergens (dairy, soy, gluten) and capsule type (gelatin vs. plant-based).
- 5. Compare price per serving — Specifically, price per relevant activity unit at the labeled dose — not price per capsule or per bottle.
- 6. Ignore unsupported "more enzymes is better" framing — A longer ingredient list isn't evidence of effectiveness — check what's actually documented for your specific use case.

- Single enzyme vs. multi-enzyme blend — A single-enzyme product targeting your specific issue is easier to evaluate and dose than a broad blend, where you often can't tell how much of any one enzyme you're getting relative to your need.
