How to choose a digestive enzyme supplement
This page won't tell you which brand to buy. It's a framework for evaluating any product yourself, using the same criteria we'll eventually use when we cover specific products.
1. Enzyme-to-substrate match
Start with what you're actually trying to digest. A product needs to contain the enzyme that acts on the substance causing your symptom — lactase for lactose, alpha-galactosidase for the oligosaccharides in beans and cruciferous vegetables, protease for protein, lipase for fat. A "full-spectrum" blend isn't automatically better if it's diluting the one enzyme you actually need.
2. Activity per recommended dose, not just milligrams
Check for a standardized activity unit (ALU, GalU, HUT, DU, FIP — see our activity units guide) at the labeled serving size. A product listing only milligrams, with no activity unit, gives you no reliable way to judge real strength.
3. Single enzyme vs. multi-enzyme blend
A single-enzyme product targeting your specific issue (say, lactase alone for dairy) is easier to evaluate and dose appropriately than a broad multi-enzyme blend, where you often can't tell how much of any one enzyme you're actually getting relative to your need. Blends can make sense for general, non-specific digestive support, but they're a different, less precisely evaluable category than a targeted single-enzyme product.
4. Enzyme source: animal, microbial, or plant-based
Digestive enzymes are sourced from animal tissue (e.g., pancreatin, derived from pig or cow pancreas), microbial fermentation (bacteria or fungi engineered or selected to produce a specific enzyme), or plants (e.g., bromelain from pineapple, papain from papaya). Source matters for dietary restrictions (kosher, halal, vegan, vegetarian) and can affect the pH range the enzyme works best in — microbial enzymes often function across a broader pH range than some animal-derived ones.
5. Allergens and capsule type
Check the full ingredient list for common allergens (dairy, soy, gluten) used in the enzyme production process or as fillers — this matters even for a product meant to help with a dairy or gluten issue, since the capsule shell or filler itself can occasionally contain traces. Also check capsule type (gelatin vs. plant-based/vegetarian capsule) if that matters to you.
6. Price per relevant activity unit
Once you know the activity unit that matters for your use case, compare price per unit of that activity at the labeled dose — not price per capsule or price per bottle, which can be misleading when serving sizes and potencies differ between products.
7. Documentation and its limits
Ask what evidence tier the specific enzyme and use case falls into: well-documented (like lactase for lactose intolerance), limited evidence (like alpha-galactosidase for general gas), or out of scope for an OTC product entirely (like exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). A confident marketing claim doesn't change which tier the underlying research actually supports — see our editorial policy for how we make that call.
8. When to see a doctor instead
Persistent symptoms that don't improve with an appropriately-matched enzyme, unexplained weight loss, chronic greasy or floating stools, or a known pancreatic condition are reasons to see a clinician rather than trying another supplement — see our page on exocrine pancreatic insufficiency for why that specific condition needs medical management, not an OTC product.
