Digestive enzymes, explained
Digestive enzymes are proteins that break down food into absorbable pieces. Your body already makes a full set of them — in saliva, the stomach, the pancreas, and the small intestine. Over-the-counter enzyme supplements are an attempt to add to, or substitute for, that natural supply in specific situations.
The enzymes your body makes
- Amylase — breaks down starches into sugars. Made in saliva and the pancreas.
- Protease — breaks down proteins into amino acids. Made in the stomach (as pepsin) and the pancreas.
- Lipase — breaks down fats into fatty acids and glycerol. Made mainly by the pancreas.
- Lactase — breaks down lactose, the sugar in milk, into glucose and galactose. Made in the small intestine; production naturally declines with age in most of the world's population.
Where supplements have a documented role
The clearest, best-supported use case is lactase supplementation for lactose intolerance — see our dedicated guide below. Beyond that, over-the-counter multi-enzyme blends are marketed for general digestion, bloating, and high-protein diets, but the research behind these broader claims is limited and mixed. We'll cover specific enzyme types in more depth as we publish more pages, and we'll be explicit about the strength of evidence each time.
Where supplements are the wrong tool
If enzyme production fails at the source — most seriously in exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), where the pancreas doesn't make enough digestive enzymes — the standard of care is a medical diagnosis followed by prescription pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT), dosed by a clinician. That is not the same product category as an over-the-counter enzyme supplement, and we won't present it as an alternative to one. If you have symptoms like chronic greasy or floating stools, unexplained weight loss, or a known pancreatic condition, the right next step is a doctor.
